Sourcing route decision

Alibaba vs 1688: which sourcing route fits this order?

Do not choose from the product-page price alone. First decide whether the lower domestic-market quote survives a like-for-like comparison — and whether you can replace the operating support you would give up.

Answer for the order you are deciding on now.

What stage is this order?
Have you matched the 1688 quote to the same supplier or equivalent specification, quantity and scope?
Do you already have a workable China-side operating path?

Think communication, payment/receiving, consolidation if needed, and an export/freight handoff — not simply access to the website.

Is Alibaba.com order protection important for this order?

The platform difference that matters

Alibaba Group describes 1688.com as a domestic wholesale marketplace in China. It describes Alibaba.com as a global B2B e-commerce platform with sourcing, online transaction, supply-chain fulfillment and after-sales services.

That means an overseas buyer should treat the choice as an operating-model decision, not as a rule that one site is always cheaper. The 1688 product price only becomes decision-useful after the domestic-market route and the export route are both defined.

Official Alibaba Group descriptions establish different target markets for 1688.com and Alibaba.com; they do not establish that the same product will always cost less on 1688.

QuantityMOQ, tier, setup/tooling, sample termsDifferent order economics can create an artificial price gap.
China-side costDomestic freight, receiving, consolidation, service feesThese costs sit between the listing and the export handoff.

Transaction protectionWhere the order and payment are actually madeAlibaba.com says Trade Assurance protection depends on ordering and paying through its platform.

Do not treat payment method and platform protection as the same thing

Alibaba.com states that Trade Assurance protects orders placed and paid through Alibaba.com, including supported wire transfers made using the official bank information shown by Alibaba.com. Its guidance also warns buyers not to pay outside the platform when they want that protection.

Buyer-side rule: if platform protection is part of why the current order feels acceptable, count the value of that protection before treating a lower domestic-market quote as a saving.
